Record number of countries skipped the UN’s Durban 25 event

Catching up: this happened on September 28, a couple of weeks ago, and it is still worth knowing about.

When the UN General Assembly marked 25 years since the 2001 Durban Conference on September 28, dozens of member states chose not to take part.

The United States put the number at 48, nearly a quarter of the UN. Israel’s UN mission said more than 40. Both said it was a record, up from 38 in 2021.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry and groups such as UN Watch had urged countries to stay away, saying the 2001 conference turned into a platform for antisemitism and attacks on Israel.

The meeting went ahead at UN headquarters in New York, and participants approved a draft political declaration for later adoption.
